Fool Proof: A Study in Proverbs
Week 3 | Meaningful Conversations
Today we’ll hear from Jake Potter, Christ Fellowship’s student ministry pastor.
A transcript of this video is available here.
Ask yourself
-
- What does Jake’s reminder that God spoke creation into existence mean to you? How does it make you think about your own speech?
- Think of an example of a time that you really benefitted from something someone said? What effect did it have on you? How did it bring life?
- Now think of a time when words brought you pain that was so great it felt like death? How did those words change you or the choices you made next?
Pray
Almighty Creator, who spoke the world into existence. In the beginning, your Spirit hovered over the chaos of the deep, and by your words, you brought order and life.
May we be people who speak life to others and bring goodness into this world by our words and deeds. Holy Spirit, teach us to not just control the evil we are tempted to speak, but to use our words to bring peace, joy, creativity, love, and hope.
Make it so, dearest Jesus. It’s in you that we place our faith. Teach us to be faithful.
Amen.
Talk about it
Have you found someone to talk over Proverbs with? If not, what better week to find someone! As we’ve learned, wisdom is often revealed in community. Let the “talk about it” questions each day prompt a meaningful conversation. These questions are great to think through on your own, but even better to discuss.
Share the stories you thought about above. Share a time when words brought you life, and when they brought you a pain that felt like death. What were the circumstances? How did these words affect your relationships? In the case of harmful words, what could have been done differently?
