Fool Proof: A Study in Proverbs

Week 2 | The Beginning of Wisdom

Welcome to our Fool Proof series!

Today we’ll hear from Christ Fellowship’s own Matt Thielepape who’ll be delivering a special Father’s Day message from the book of Proverbs this Sunday.

Ask yourself

  • What three stages of life did Matt mention? How can we bring Dad joy in each of these stages?
  • What stage of life are you currently in with your own Dad? We’ll be exploring what Proverbs says about our relationship with our dads for the rest of the week, but what is your initial reaction to Matt’s introduction?
  • How can you pray for and support someone who’s having a hard time because Father’s Day is coming up? Maybe they’ve lost their dad, or never knew him. Maybe their relationship with their father is painful. Or maybe it’s you who is struggling. If Father’s Day brings up difficult memories or painful feelings, how can you reach out to your Heavenly Father in prayer and to your brothers and sisters in Christ for support?

Pray

Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Sprit — source of wisdom and love,

you designed human families to be a source of blessing. When they are not, you see and you care.

Grant us wisdom so that we may love each other well. Strengthen our bonds and give us joy in our relationships with our earthly fathers. Heal brokenness, reconcile what is torn apart, restore what has been lost.

In the name of Jesus we pray,

Amen.

Talk about it

As we learned last week, a proverb is not a law or a promise. It’s a general principle that when properly applied can help us develop wisdom, or the skill of living. It’s in prayer and in community with other believers that we can best work out how to apply any given proverb to our circumstances.

So, we’re encouraging you to find at least one other person — a friend, family member, someone in your Life Group — to go through this study with. Each day we’re providing “Talk about it” questions that are good to think through on your own, but even better to talk over with someone else.

    • Think about a time when you saw your dad happy or had fun with your dad. Share that story.
    • Everyone’s relationship with their dad is different. Some are better than others. Share a specific prayer request concerning your Father and commit to praying for each other this week.
